“That’s a lovely name,” He complimented before placing his lips on my own again. “Your mom was right to name you that, your lips are soft like satin.”
And just like that, I was gone again.
It was around 4 am when I left the party to get back to my dorm. We had sex twice more before I decided I had to leave. I'm not sure if he heard me leave because he was knocked out after.
I didn't get it. He can play football and practice for more than seven hours, but when it comes to sex, they could only a couple of rounds. Why?
My morning lecture dragged more than usual and my cup of overpriced campus coffee sitting on the desk was doing nothing to stop my yawning. I didn't get sleep all weekend because I couldn't stop thinking about Zeus.
That neglected Calculus problem set I waited to do last minute played a huge part too.
Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore, so I left the lecture hall. I'd just get the rest of the class online, because it wasn't like I was actually taking notes and paying attention. My mind was too overwhelmed to even think straight.
It was getting cooler outside and goosebumps were starting to form on my bare legs. My skirt swayed in the light breeze, and I clutched my sweater tighter around my shoulders. Honestly, it was a stupid decision to wear anything that revealed my legs, especially in this kind of weather.
“Hey!” My head jerked up, and I saw a guy in a letterman jacket running towards my direction.
I glanced behind me to see if he was calling someone else, but there was only a girl across the yard that was too far. Turning back around, I raised an eyebrow at him when he caught up.
“Cashmere, right?” He asked for clarification.
I took in his appearance. Light eyes, black curls tousled on his head messily, and tanned skin. He was about 6'3 and tall, and I could see the small silver hoop of a septum sticking out from the bottom of his nose.
“Who's asking?” I shot back, not stopping for him.
“Wow, Zeus wasn't lying,” he said, a smirk now present on his attractive face as he fell into step with me. “You are a feisty piece of work.”
Zeus? Oh shit.
Since someone from the football team was approaching me, Zeus probably told the entire team how I put out. God, I'm such an idiot!
“I don't know what you're talking about,” I told him, with a shrug of my shoulder even though my heart was beating at top speed. “Now can you move out of my way?”
I shifted away from him to keep walking but again he stepped into my path. “I'm the only one Zeus told. I'm his best friend, Diego.”
I've heard about Diego Morales, he was almost as equally notorious as Zeus himself. He was the running back for NAU, and he had quite a reputation from what I heard about him. They were partners in crime, so my tough resolve faded slightly. Not completely, but a little bit.
“Okay, so why are you approaching me?” I asked, confused. Just to tell me he knows Zeus and I slept together?
“Zeus wanted to let you know—” I cut him off right there.
“Hell no. I'm not playing this messenger shit with him,” I said sharply, while rolling my eyes. “Why don't you tell him if he wants me to hear something, he should come and find me himself?”
I stepped around him and he let me walk off back towards my dorm. I needed a nap.
four: quench
I stared at the ceiling of my room while throwing and catching a miniature basketball in the air. “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better, and your better is best.”
A day passed since I spoke to Diego and I haven't heard a word from Zeus, but I tried not to be too concerned. After all, I didn't give him any contact information, and this school had almost 20,000 students that attended.
“Good, better, best. Never let it rest,” I repeated, still throwing the ball up over and over. “Until your good is better, and your better—”
“Oh my god, would you shut the hell up!” Isra slammed her textbook closed and flung her alarm clock at me, which I deflected successfully. “You've been saying that shit for the past hour! Get out!”
“But it's raining outside,” I whined, my bottom lip curling outward in a pout. That was the only reason I skipped out on editor’s meeting scheduled today. “What am I supposed to do?”
She clearly wasn't having it. “I don't care what you do, you just can't do it here. I have a midterm this week and we can't all be finished with our exams like you. Now go away!”
Begrudgingly, I sat up to throw a sweatshirt over my head and walked out the door.
I decided to walk across campus to grab a cup of coffee from the bookstore cafe. By the time I walked there and back, Isra would've been halfway through the chapter which was good enough for me.
Shielding my head with my hood, I pushed my way out into the windy rain and started my trek to the other side of the school.
To get to the bookstore, you had to cross through the junior dorms' parking lot and I didn't think much of it until a car honked at me.
Looking up I saw a Ford pickup truck block my path and I furrowed my eyebrows. What the hell?
I tried to go around it, but the car only shifted up further which cut me off again. I stopped trying with a sigh and walked up to the window. Clearly, they wanted my attention.
When the window rolled down, I was surprised to see the almighty Zeus himself staring at me with a grin. “Where are you headed in this kind of weather?”
“None of your business,” I answered quickly before backing away from the car. “Is this your definition of 'come and find me'? Because you failed.”
I could hear his low chuckle over the rain, and I wanted to melt on sight. “I was just headed to your dorm right now actually.”
My head tilted to the right in amusement. “Liar.”
“Room 406, your roommate is named Isra and your RA is named Jackie Phillips,” he rattled off, with a careless shrug. “It's not like I have that information memorized for nothing.”
A small smile sat on my lips before I glanced back at him. “I'm headed to the campus bookstore for coffee so I can let my friend study for her midterm.”
“I know a place off-campus that sells better coffee than that overpriced campus garbage they try and pass off as caffeine,” he told me before I heard him unlock his truck. “Hop in, I'll take you there.”
As much as I wanted to jump at the chance to be in a car with him, a person who I suddenly felt the strongest connection when I was around him, I had to hesitate.
“It's just coffee, Cashmere.” It was as if he read my mind. “It doesn't have to mean anything.”
Oh, but I wanted it to mean something so badly…
I shook my head and moved away from the car for him to drive away. I didn’t want to be seen with another athlete, especially one as known as him. That was hardly in my best interest.
“What are you doing?” He asked, confusion clear in his tone.
“It's okay, we really don’t have to do—”
“Cash, I’m not gonna lie, I don’t care about whatever excuse you’re about to spit to me now,” he interrupted. “Just get in the car.”
I gave him a look since I was confused about who he was speaking to like that. I was not about to be ordered around, even if I wanted to get in the car.
“Oh, come on,” he whined while pouting his lip, which I had to admit, it was pretty cute. I would’ve given up right then and there and just listened to him. “Don’t pretend you don’t fuck with me now when you did last week.”
My jaw dropped, almost taken aback by the bluntness of his statement. There was no way he was like this, so I walked away from his car and back into the rain. I wasn’t going to take him disrespecting me like I was just some girl.
“Shit, wait Cash!” I heard him fumble to take his seatbelt off and get out the car but that just told me to quicken my pace. “Wait!”
The fact that he would say that to my face showed his blatant disregard for not just me, but for women. He was going
to use the example of me doing something willingly before and use it against me in a similar situation, to coax me into giving in.
He was no better than them, and I had to get out of there. I sped up my walk and tried to leave this situation as quickly as possible.
I knew better than to get involved with another guy from this school, let alone a sportsperson. But of course, I couldn’t help myself and hooked up with him like a dumbass.
I heard his car shut off and the door slam. I didn't get that far, because he after all was an athlete.
He spun me around by the elbow and stopped me from walking. “Hold on.”
I jerked my elbow out from his grasp. “I'm not just gonna sit here and have you talk to me like that. What do you take me for, an airhead?”
He bowed his head before looking up at me through his thick dark lashes. “I'm sorry, Cashmere. It was never my intention to disrespect or undermine you.”
I blinked in shock, surprised that he apologized. I know it wasn’t right of me to make assumptions but based on his behavior he didn’t seem like the type to apologize so easily. And it's not I could say no; not with the way he looked at me. Maybe that was his thing that worked with women, and I could clearly see why because I was falling for it.
“Whatever,” I said, exasperation clear in my tone. I was still a bit skeptical, though. I always had to be around him. “Just stop looking at me like that.”
He chuckled before nudging me in the direction of his truck. “Now c'mon. We're soaked as hell from this rain. Do you mind holding off on the coffee so we can go back to my dorm and change?”
“We?” My eyebrow raised at his choice of words. “What makes you think I want to come along?”
With an eye roll, Zeus sent me a smirk. “Oh please, I know you're curious to see the inside of the coveted Mecca Dorms.”
My jaw dropped. “You live in Mecca? That's literally the best dorm on campus! I've been on the waitlist for three semesters straight!”
The Mecca Complex was known for housing athletes, honor students, and kids of faculty members in the school. It’s the most expensive university apartments on campus, but not for nothing. The amenities were insane, ranging from an indoor Olympic sized pool, a state of the art recreational center, and large rooms that hosted the best parties. Needless to say, I was extremely jealous.
He lifted a shoulder carelessly. “Being the top player in the region has its perks. Including the best housing for three consecutive years.”
“Three—!” I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. “Let's just go.”
He chuckled and we climbed into his truck. I was lucky I was wearing my hood because my hair would've been worse than what it looked like right now.
It only took a couple of minutes to drive to the Complex where Mecca was located, and I was already in awe. I've only had one class in the Complex, and it was an art elective last year. The studios were so spacious, I almost considered failing the class just so I could retake it in the same classroom.
The drive was quiet with comfortable silence between us as the sounds of Frank Ocean played softly between the spaces. The rain drowned out most of the sound, but I could still faintly hear the chorus of Super Rich Kids.
A few minutes later, he pulled into a parking spot right by the door and cut the engine off. The warmth in the air instantly died, and I suddenly remembered it was getting closer to October.
When we walked through the hallway, we passed the see through perforation between the rec center and gymnasium. Zeus caught me gazing at the tennis and basketball courts and laughed as I pursed my lips. God, I was so envious!
We arrived at his room and I could feel my heartbeat pick up as I stood in front of his door. I didn't know if it was from my excitement to see the apartment or anticipation for…what exactly?
He unlocked it and gestured for me to walk in first. I obliged and ventured into the room.
The first thing I noticed was the living area. It was roomy, with a large flat screen television along with a couch, a coffee table, and a kitchen area that had many takeout containers stacked up on the counter.
“You have roommates?” I asked out of curiosity when I saw three closed doors as I turned around.
“Yeah, my teammates Diego and Levi,” he explained while peeling the wet shirt off his torso and dumping it in his laundry basket. My eyes ran down his body and saw the tattoos on his body. The large skull on his stomach caught my attention before it trailed to the intricately detailed dragon skimming and curving to his back.
When I back into his eyes, he was looking at me with one of those cocky grins and turned so I could see the full tat. “You like this one? I just got it earlier in the year.”
“Yeah, it’s nice,” I replied, reaching out to trace the pattern on his side. He jumped in surprise before grasping my fingers.
“Fuck, you’re so cold,” He quipped as he held my digits in his hand. The heat in the room was on, but that didn't stop my body from shivering. In just a week the temperature fluctuated from super warm to freezing cold, so there was no way to predict the weather, and it sucked.
“Hey, let me dry those for you,” He said, glancing at my body. “You're drenched and freezing.”
I nodded my head and peeled the sweatshirt from my body to hand it over to him. Realizing my shirt was wet too, I took it off as well. I groaned when I realized my bra was wet also.
“Can I just give you all my clothes?” I asked, picking at the strap of my bra. “I don't want to wear half dry, half wet clothing.”
Looking up at him, I noticed his eyes were trained on my chest and quickly crossed my arms to grab his attention. When his eyes snapped up, I almost curled into a ball. He was staring at me the same dark, hooded gaze he gave me the first night we met.
That look alone made me want to do very, very bad things.
“My room is the first door, just undress and pick a t-shirt from the closet and hand me your clothes when you're done,” he directed, plopping himself down on the leather couch. “I'll be out here.”
He closed the door softly behind him and I sat on his bed, consumed by his smell.
I slipped my bra off and peeled my jeans off, which made me notice that my underwear was wet as well, but I wasn't going to take them off. I had boundaries.
Walking over to his drawer, I pulled out a large long sleeved grey shirt and slipped it over my head. It barely brushed the middle of my thighs and I hugged my arms around myself.
The fabric smelled like him and I wanted to bury my head in the shirt or even his pillow and inhale his woodsy scent forever.
So, I did just that.
Jumping on his bed, I laughed with mirth as I found myself rolling around in his black colored sheets.
It was uncalled for, I knew that as much, but I couldn't help myself from doing it at least once.
His sheets were incredibly soft, and I felt like I could drift to sleep in his bed.
Oh no, I thought to myself as my eyelids grew heavy and I felt my body relax.
A loud knock sounded from the door. “Zeus, get the fuck out here!”
Rubbing a hand over my face, I noticed the room was now dark and glancing over at the nightstand, I saw the clock read 6:43 PM.
I tried to get up, but to my surprise, two hands wrapped themselves around my waist and pulled me back into the bed.
“Going somewhere?” Zeus murmured, sleep clouding his tone, making it sound deeper and more erotic than anything I'd ever heard in my life.
“I—um,” I started but I was stopped by the incessant banging on the door.
“You missed practice, get out and stop fucking your slut!” The person yelled from behind the door. “Coach is angry!”
My body tensed up immediately at that word. Slut?
“Let go of me,” I spat, trying to wriggle out of his strong hold on my waist. “I want to leave.”
“Don't do this,” he pleaded, sitting up on the bed and pulling me back in between his legs.
“What exactly am I doing?” I asked spitefully, craning my neck to look at him. “I'm just leaving just like one of your 'sluts'. Who you seem to forget are women with feelings too…”
My voice trailed off as I felt his soft lips on my neck as he skimmed them across my skin. Sighing, I knew I couldn't resist him when it came to his mouth. It was all too tempting, which was why I didn't hold back when he enveloped my lips with his own.
His warm hands slipped underneath the large shirt and slowly trailed from my lower abdomen to the underside of my breasts.
“Z, OPEN THE DOOR!” The voice behind the door shouted, anger now clear in his voice.
I winced before pulling away from him. If someone was that desperate to get in, it could be an emergency. “It sounds urgent, you should get it.”
Groaning, he pulled back and stood from the bed to answer the door while I sat in the bed with my ankles tucked underneath myself.
“What the hell do you want?” He spat out, opening his door to come face to face with the wide receiver of the North Atlantic football team, Levi Williams.
Levi was known as a beast around campus. With his modelesque features, pearly white teeth, and broad shoulders, he was one of the most attractive looking men I’ve ever laid eyes on. What were these players drinking?!
His body took up most of the doorframe as he tried to peer inside the room. His dark eyes met mine and he looked me up and down before pursing his lips. “Hey, you’re that girl with the weird name everyone's been talking about in the locker room.”
I smiled back, but it wasn't remotely polite. “And you’re that wide receiver who barely passed high school and the only reason why he's in college is because of his athletic scholarship, aren’t you?”
His joking demeanor faded, and his eyes narrowed. “You know, girls like you make it really hard for me to respect women.”
I cocked an eyebrow at him before shrugging my shoulders. “Well, who said I wanted respect from you?”
Levi's eyes never left mine. “Control your bitch, Zeus. She's got a mouth like no other.”
Zeus said nothing but looked in between the two of us, all of a sudden muter than my television screen during commercials. Then I really registered what Levi said. Control whose bitch?
